Blizzard of Odds (And Ends)
15 02, 15
dear shovelers and shiverers,
greetings from snow-smothered boston! as we wearily dig out from each weekly wave of snow that invades and settles on every surface, we try to carry on with the work of civilization… job, home life, and play… whether it be sledding, sports parades, or arts performances. in my case i have arts-related news (as you might have guessed) in the form of performances to stave off cabin fever, or a book delivered to your door in case you just can't muster the will to leave the house and fight the elements any longer.
in the immediate future i'm excited to be singing as part of a choir at New England Conservatory for a performance of a re-interpretion of Hildegard von Bingen's Order of the Virtues. NEC's Contemporary Improvisation department presents this 12th century liturgical drama drawing on the original score and text, as well as works by Duke Ellington, the Carter family, and from Sufi zikr and folk traditions from around the world.
i'm honored to sing as a part of a chorus in NEC student Burçu Gülec's performance piece in this concert. Burçu has recognized kindred messages in the words of Christian mystic and abbess Hildegard as well as in the poetry of a Turkish Sufi mystic, and will be singing Hildegard's words which she has translated into her native Turkish language. Percussion, flute, and a chorus chanting a traditional Sufi zikr will accompany her voice, which is one of the most astounding voices you may hear in your lifetime. the concert is this tuesday, and it's FREE!
as for works that i've penned, i can now point you in the direction of the latest edition of Constellations literary journal, where THREE of my poems appear in print!
in addition, there are exciting performances with jaggery approaching in early and later spring. read on for details!
brumally yours,
petaluma
